AFAIK the 6004 problem is solved with 3.0.650 and above. So, I do have a network connection, and I can do all my day-to-day stuff, I just don't like seeing errors in my event log if they can be fixed or I'll need to pursue this problem further, as it's now causing real problems rather than being an academic curiosity! Once connected, I can copy files, play audio/video files from that machine with no further errors.
