Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Will Not Install

I didn't work. Although the short version to do a clean installation was tempting, I recently reinstalled my Vista Ultimate Edition and didn't feel I should need to do it again. I install the update, which by the way, just takes me few minutes curiouslly. Thier 'advanced' LAST suggestion is to uninstall all internet security software/virus protection which I did and still no luck, same error message as above.
