The first drive is typically your boot drive, but you can check the Flags column to make sure. Ubuntu 11.04 didn't start after rebuilding my MBR, but these simple steps were easier than rebuiling, and it worked! Actually I didnt lost my data, but this partition in computer management is white with blue frame and no description. I just forced VESA mode with 1280X1024 resolution (the native resolution of my laptop). Otherwise, you will either have to test the recovery disks on your current system (and not after installing GNU/Linux, since installing Vista will wipe out the GRUB boot loader for GNU/Linux), I just get a blue blank screen and nothing happens after that. my review here Is there a way for me to extend C without formatting and reinstalling?

I use GParted to reformat my hard drive partition. I have read through a ton of forums and got bits and pieces of info, such as the boot might be corrupted and to use the Vista DVD, which don't help. Thanks Scott, I give that a try when I get home. You 250 GB external drive is formatted as FAT32, though NTFS would be more efficient at such a partition size.
the instructions you gave worked perfectly for me and i didn't even have a full version of the windows xp disk (all i had was the update version of windows) but Also running. #ntfsfix /dev/xxxx fixed up the bad things that the earlier version of gparted did to my Vista NTFS volume partition. I will give your suggestions a try today and let you know what I come up with. There are no other known alternative messages for this boot error, except the "Error loading operating system" text that appears on your computer's black screen at startup.
